Colchester United have snapped up Paul Reid following the defender's departure from Barnsley.
The former Tykes captain's contract at Oakwell was cancelled on Monday and he has quickly secured a new club.
He has accepted a deal with Colchester after passing a medical and trained with his new team-mates on Tuesday.
Reid had spent four seasons with Barnsley after joining from Northampton Town, but fell out of favour last term.
The 26-year-old made just three Championship appearances - one of which saw him sent off against Colchester - before undertaking a loan spell at home-town club Carlisle United.
The centre-half, who can also play a holding midfield role, is Colchester's third addition of the summer following the arrivals of Matt Heath and Matt Lockwood.
