Halford hands U's boost

Colchester have confirmed that Greg Halford has not suffered a broken toe.

Colchester United starlet Greg Halford should be available at the weekend after the Championship club confirmed the 21-year-old has not suffered a broken toe.

Halford left the Essex outfit sweating after picking up a problem during Monday night's 2-1 defeat at the hands of Coventry, but subsequent X-rays have yielded encouraging news.

Club physio Tony Flynn has confirmed that the versatile Halford only suffered bruising and that he should be ready to take the field against Southampton on Saturday.

"His toe was sore throughout the game but not sore enough to prevent him finishing the match," Flynn told the club's official website.

"After the game, he said it was throbbing so there was the possibility that he could have broken a bone.

"He subsequently went for an X-ray on Wednesday and I was very pleased when it revealed that there was, in fact, no fracture.

"The bruising will be painful for a little while but it shouldn't stop him being available for Saturday's match."
