Luton Town's lead at the top of League One has been cut to six points after a surprise 3-1 defeat at struggling Port Vale.

Mike Newell's side took an early lead when Kevin Foley struck after six minutes, but Dave Hibbert scored the first of his brace three minutes before the break to make it 1-1.

Hibbert then scored the eventual winner just before the hour mark and the three points were taken by the Potteries club when Lee Matthews scored Vale's third goal nine minutes from time.

Luton's defeat at Vale Park allowed second place Hull City to cut their lead at the summit, as first half strikes from Leon Cort and Nicky Barmby (pictured) gave The Tigers a 2-0 home win over Colchester United.

Tranmere Rovers failed to keep pace with Hull after being held to a 1-1 draw at Bournemouth.

Paul Hall gave Rovers the lead midway through the opening half before Matthew Mills earned a point for The Cherries two minutes before half time to keep them in the play-off places.

Brentford scored two goals in the final eight minutes to earn a 3-3 draw with Sheffield Wednesday at Griffin Park.

The Owls looked on course for a victory in South West London when a Lee Peacock brace (4, 41) gave the visitors a two-goal lead.

Deon Burton pulled a goal back for The Bees three minutes before the break before Wednesday restored their two-goal advantage on 49 minutes through Lee Bullen.

However, Martin Allen's side never gave up on the contest and after Ryan Peters had made it 3-2 on 82 minutes, Stephen Hunt delighted the home crowd by equalising in the dying stages.

Stockport County gave themselves a lifeline in their quest to get off the foot of the table with a 1-0 home win over play-off hopefuls Hartlepool United.

Warren Feeney's first half strike gave Chris Turner's side three valuable points at Edgeley Park.

Swindon Town and Doncaster Rovers remain on the edge of the play-off places after drawing 1-1 at Belle Vue.

Lee Holmes gave The Robins an early lead on five minutes, but Donny took a point when Neil Roberts equalised for Dave Penney's side on the half hour mark.

Bristol City missed the chance to move into the play-off places after being held to a 1-1 draw by Blackpool at Ashton Gate.

Stephen Brooker gave The Robins the lead midway through the first half before Richie Wellens earned The Seasiders a point with an equaliser on the hour mark.

Walsall came from a goal down to earn a 1-1 draw with Bradford City at The Bescot Stadium.

Steven Schumacher gave The Bantams a half time lead before Neil Emblen levelled matters in the second half for a share of the spoils in the Black Country.

Peterborough United earned a vital 3-1 victory at Chesterfield.

Richard Logan gave The Posh the lead after 12 minutes before Wayne Purser doubled their advantage two minutes later.

Gareth Davies pulled a goal back on 24 minutes for The Spireites, but the visitors made sure of the win at Saltergate when Purser got his second goal just after the hour mark.

Chesterfield finished the match with ten men after Caleb Folan was sent off for violent conduct on 64 minutes.

Huddersfield Town heaped more misery on managerless Oldham Athletic with a 2-1 win at The Galpharm Stadium.

A first half brace from Pawel Abbott gave The Terriers all three points, despite recent signing Guy Branston's second half reply for The Latics.

Oldham are a point above the relegation places, as are Torquay United, after they were thrashed 4-1 at Barnsley.

The Tykes stormed into a three-goal lead after first half strikes from Stephen McPhail (24), Michael Chopra (27) and Paul Reid (29).
