Tykes return to the top

BARNSLEY have returned to the top of Division Two with a convincing 2-0 away victory at struggling Chesterfield.

New Tykes owner Peter Ridsdale will be delighted with his club's performance at Saltergate, as goals by Anthony Kay and Craig Ireland sent them back to the top of the table, although Kay's day was soured when he was sent off for two yellow cards.

Fellow South Yorkshire side Sheffield Wednesday moved to second after second half goals by Paul Smith and Terry Cooke gave The Owls a 2-0 win over Tranmere Rovers at Hillsborough.

Port Vale drop from the summit of the Second Division but were able to salvage a point at Stockport County, despite being 2-0 down at the break, thanks to goals by the prolific Luke Beckett and Kevin Ellison.

The match turned in the second half as The Hatters had James Goodwin sent off for a two-footed tackle.

The Valiants then came back into it, as Billy Paynter scored eight minutes before the end and Sam Collins stepped up to equalise in the dying stages for Vale at Edgeley Park.

Queens Park Rangers were held to a 2-2 draw at Colchester United, who took a 1-0 half-time lead through Rowan Vine.

QPR then turned it around with a brace from Paul Furlong but a Scott McGleish penalty meant the points were shared at Layer Road.

Brighton & Hove Albion were also held to a 2-2 draw by Swindon Town at the Withdean Stadium.

Sam Parkin's brace for The Robins was cancelled out by Gary Hart and a Darius Henderson penalty on the South Coast.

Rushden & Diamonds got goals from Rodney Jack and Onandi Lowe to defeat nine-man Wycombe Wanderers 2-0 at Nene Park.

The Chairboys had goalkeeper Frank Talia sent off early on for a professional foul, as well as Chris Vinnicombe for two yellow cards.

Luton Town were held to a 1-1 draw by crisis club Notts County at Meadow Lane.

Chris Coyne scored for The Hatters but Tony Barras equalised for The Magpies in the second half, as Luton's Paul Hughes was sent off for two yellow cards late on in the match.

In a noon-hour kick-off, Bournemouth earned a hard-fought point against Bristol City after an entertaining goalless draw at Dean Court.

Lee Peacock had the visitors' best chance of the first half with a header just wide of the post, while Stephen Purches forced Steve Phillips into a fine save for the home side.

The Robins dominated the second half, but could not break down a stubborn Bournemouth defence, as both sides had to settle for a point.

Plymouth Argyle recorded a solid 3-1 victory over struggling Brentford at Griffin Park.

Ian Stonebridge and a Micky Evans brace were enough to give The Pilgrims all three points in South West London.

Ben May replied for The Bees, who had Leo Roget sent off for serious foul play late on.

Hartlepool United were held to a 0-0 draw by Oldham Athletic at Victoria Park.

Finally, Grimsby Town came from a goal down to draw 1-1 with Barry Fry's Peterborough United at Blundell Park.

Posh took the lead through Adam Newton's 25-yard curling strike but Michael Boulding earned The Mariners a point with a equaliser ten minutes from time.
