Stoke City are preparing a late move to trump Middlesbrough and sign veteran goalkeeper Shay Given, Sky sources understand.

And Given is expected at Stoke today to have a medical and discuss personal terms.

The Republic of Ireland international is set to be released from the final year of his contract at Aston Villa and it seemed likely that he would rejoin a Middlesbrough side where he spent three months on loan during the 2013-14 season.

Middlesbrough head coach Aitor Karanka said: "Shay was here, I know him, he knows me, so we are working to do the deal. Let's see."

Stoke fly out to Singapore this week with Asmir Begovic in their tour party; the City No 1 has been linked with both Chelsea and Manchester United this summer.

Manager Mark Hughes said: "There have been discussions, but we're in the same place we were a couple of days ago, He's due to fly out on Saturday."
