Stoke City defender Clint Hill will be sidelined for a further six weeks after being told he needs an operation on his injured ankle.

The 25-year-old has been dogged by the problem since pre-season, with Potters boss Tony Pulis saying in early november that he expected Hill to be out for some time.

The former Oldham Athletic defender received treatment in hospital on Thursday and will now be out of action until the New Year, after recent scans revealed the source of Hill's ankle problem.

"Although Clint has been playing, he has been struggling and we have identified a little spur of bone around the ankle joint which needs to be removed," Pulis told the club's official website.

"He is going to have surgery immediately and at the moment we are looking at up to six weeks before he will be ready to play again."
