BRYNJAR GUNNARSSON has jetted off to Portugal for a trial with Sporting Braga, but Stoke are still looking to keep hold of the Icelander.

The Icelandic international is in the final weeks of his contract and is looking at other options after being offered reduced terms by Stoke.

The defender has joined up with Braga for a trial, but Stoke are planning to talk again when he returns.

"Although Brynjar has gone out there to train with them, I remain hopeful he will stay with us," Stoke chairman Gunnar Gislason said.

"We have stated our intention to offer him a new contract and he will be about to receive that offer in writing, if he hasn't already.

"I would say we have made him a realistic offer, though he might disagree. But some agents and players have already come to realise football must now exist in a more realistic world."
