Southampton keeper Kelvin Davis says memories came 'flooding back' on return

Southampton goalkeeper Kelvin Davis admits that his return to first-team action on Saturday was an emotional occasion.

The 38-year-old club captain came off the bench in the early stages of the contest when Fraser Forster was stretchered off with a knee injury.

And Davis ended up being named man of the match after making key saves from Burnley strikers Danny Ings and Sam Vokes during Southampton’s 2-0 win.

“Stepping on to the pitch and hearing the fans was a special moment," he said.

"It was real touching, really emotional. You've got to control that and think of the job in the hand but it was a great feeling, it made me feel very welcome.

“Some memories coming flooding back, from when I was doing that week in, week out."

Davis had not been in first-team action since an FA Cup loss to Sunderland last February and he was given a standing ovation by his team mates in the dressing room.

I respect Fraser a hell of a lot. A good guy and a great professional. I hope he has a speedy recovery and that he's back putting a Saints shirt on soon

"We are a tight group," he said.

"From the outside it is something you say a lot, but moments like that show what we are about.

“We're close and appreciate each other maybe a little more than other teams. It was a lovely moment and I appreciate it."

Davis had become accustomed to backing up Forster and is sorry that the club’s first-choice goalkeeper appears set to be out for the rest of the season.

"You know the situation and I'm very accepting of it, he is one of the best keepers in the league," said Davis. "You understand the position and role.

“It is almost a different position, a position that suits experienced goalkeepers, who understand the game and are willing to work hard during the week and be available if and when needed.

"Him coming off he pitch, that's not how you want your opportunity to come.

“I respect Fraser a hell of a lot. A good guy and a great professional.

“I hope he has a speedy recovery and that he's back putting a Saints shirt on soon."
