Steven Davis was certainly not interested in discussing Southampton’s title credentials after Saints had continued their excellent run of form with a 2-0 victory over Leicester on Saturday.

Shane Long netted both goals during the closing 15 minutes on the south coast to keep his side second in the Premier League table.

The midfielder said: “To be honest we’re only looking to take each game as it comes.

“We know how difficult the Premier League is and we’ve got a tough December coming up as well, so it’s important we remain focused and keep putting the same effort we’ve put into each and every game so far.”

On his club’s excellent defending this campaign – just five goals conceded in 11 games – Davis added: “That’s the foundations you have to build on and our defensive record this season is something we’re very proud of and want to continue.

“We defend as a unit and as a team and we’re delighted with the way that’s going but we’ll have to keep that momentum going.”

As for picking up an injury on Saturday, the Northern Ireland international went on: “I felt my hamstring a little bit and it was more a precaution coming off than anything.

“I would have played on but didn’t want to make it any worse. Obvioulsy, we’ll let it settle down over the next couple of days and then assess it.”
