Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino will encourage his players to draw inspiration from their second-half display in the midweek defeat at Old Trafford when they play Wigan on Saturday.

Although they lost 2-1 at Manchester United after seeing their early lead cancelled out by Wayne Rooney's brace, Sir Alex Ferguson said the performance was the best he had seen from a visiting team all season.

Pochettino has attempted to implement an expansive, attacking style of play at Southampton and will look to continue that at the DW Stadium this weekend.

"That is the way we want to play but perhaps in the first half (at Old Trafford) we weren't able to do so," he said.

"I am not happy with the way we played in the first half. That is not how we wanted to play. But I am very proud and happy with the way we played in the second.

"Our performance in the second half is going to give my players the confidence to play on like that in the future."

A win at Wigan would put Southampton six points clear of the Latics and Pochettino, who took his players on a training camp in Barcelona last week, expects a tough challenge.

"All games have their complexity and difficulty," he said. "But in any game, where you have a chance of getting the three points you must keep that mentality and go for the win."
