Sky Sports sources understand Manchester City have agreed a £16million fee for Benfica defensive midfielder Javi Garcia.
The Spaniard, 25, is having a medical with the reigning Premier League champions at Manchester's Bridgewater Hospital ahead of Friday's transfer deadline.
The versatile ex-Real Madrid player would fill the void left in Roberto Mancini's squad by the departure of Nigel de Jong to Italian giants AC Milan.
And he would also provide extra cover in central defence for the Italian boss.
City have already signed Brazil defender Maicon, Great Britain winger Scott Sinclair and ex-England goalkeeper Richard Wright on the final day of the summer transfer window.
