Saints sign Japanese centre-back

Southampton have completed a deal to sign Japan defender Maya Yoshida from Dutch side VVV-Venlo. The centre-back, who captained his country at the London Olympics, has penned a three-year contract in a deal at the newly-promoted club for a fee reportedly worth £2million. Saints boss Nigel Adkins dismissed the prospect of landing the 24-year-old following the weekend's 2-0 Premier League home defeat to Wigan. But following a poor start to the season, the south-coast club have now bolstered their squad with the former Nagoya Grampus star. Saints have already captured Steven Davis, Nathaniel Clyne, Jay Rodriguez, Emmanuel Mayuka and Paulo Gazzanigato this summer. And the club's spending may not be finished there either with Bologna's Gaston Ramirez apparently top of the club's wish list. The Uruguay international has been in talks with Saints for some time and despite negotiations faltering at one point last week, an £11million deal is understood to have edged closer towards completion.
