Adkins expecting to add

Saints will bolster their ranks before window slams shut

Nigel Adkins believes there will be further arrivals at Southampton before deadline day, but has refused to be drawn on whether Gaston Ramirez will be among them. The Saints agreed a club record fee with Bologna for Ramirez in mid-August, but have seen a protracted chase drag on from that point. It appeared as though a move for the highly-rated Uruguay international, who has been linked with some of Europe's top clubs this summer, had stalled at one stage with discussions having ground to a halt. Transfer talks are, however, back underway and the Saints are optimistic regarding their chances of landing the exciting forward. Adkins will not admit as much, but he is prepared to reveal that he will be working hard to bring quality additions into St Mary's before the transfer window slams shut on Friday. "We will be bringing players in," he said.

Next level

"We will be working hard behind the scenes. "The chairman has been great, he has backed us. We achieved back-to-back promotions and now we want to push on. "It's fair to say that we are going to bring in new players who will push us to that next level where we need to be." While Adkins remains tight-lipped when it comes to Ramirez, veteran Saints goalkeeper Kelvin Davis is prepared to discuss a player he believes will bring a bit of 'magic' to the South Coast. "Apparently Ramirez is on his way," he said. "I think it is (a statement of intent). We have done some shrewd business so far and it would be nice to add one or two more that can help us and have that little bit of magic that you need to win games."
