Dale Stephens admits he 'couldn't refuse' the chance to join Southampton after arriving on loan from Oldham Athletic.

The highly-rated midfielder has linked up with Saints until the end of the season after Oldham had rejected an initial approach from their League One rivals.

Stephens is delighted to have finally agreed a move to St Marys and is determined to play his part in Southampton's bid for promotion to the Championship.

"We're in a great position at the moment so this is a great opportunity, I couldn't refuse it, and hopefully I can push the club on to promotion," Stephens told the club's official website.

"This is a massive club - there's no secret about that, everyone knows where the club wants to go, and I want to be a part of that.

"I was initially approached by my agent and the gaffer at Oldham and when I was told about Southampton's interest, I had no other thoughts really. This is a big club for me and it's a great opportunity to take with both hands.

"It's a good club and it's well run. There's some great players here, which shows because of where they sit in the league table, but I've come in to try and play as many games as I can and hopefully push us on to promotion."
