Veteran striker seals St Mary's switch

Southampton have completed the capture of former Sunderland striker David Connolly on a free transfer. The 32-year-old, whose last appearance came for The Black Cats in January 2008, has penned a contract until the end of the season. That deal would be automatically extended by an additional year should the former Republic of Ireland international make a certain number of appearances. Manager Alan Pardew feels he could have one of the bargains of the season on his hands and has challenged the striker to recapture his best form.

Bargain

"David is keen to show that he is ready to kick back in," Pardew, who managed Connolly at West Ham, told the club's official website. "I believe in him and my staff all feel that we could get one of the bargains of the season, but only if David comes back to what he has achieved, and what he could do before, because obviously he is a Premiership player when he is at his best. "He's not played football at this level for about 18 months through injury, and one in particular, but he has been training undercover with us for about three weeks and he looks in good shape."
