Southampton have handed a trial to Graeme Murty after the full-back was released by Reading.
The former Royals skipper left the Madejski Stadium at the end of last season after not being offered a new contract by the Championship club.
Murty had spent 11 years with Reading, but made just one first-team appearance for the club last term after struggling with a calf injury.
He undertook a spell on loan at Charlton Athletic and has now been offered the chance to secure a move to Southampton.
Saints boss Mark Wotte will cast his eye over the 34-year-old in pre-season training as he looks to build a squad capable of securing promotion from League One.
"Graeme is a very experienced defender and we will be taking a look at him over the next week or so," Wotte told the club's official website.
"It is important that we do not lose any more time in our preparations for the new season and taking players on trial is an important part of that process."
