Paul Sturrock is disappointed that Dexter Blackstock chose to join Derby County rather than Sheffield Wednesday.
Sturrock had been hoping to tempt the Southampton striker to Hillsborough in order that he could bolster a woefully depleted front line.
But Blackstock opted instead to join Championship rivals Derby on a month-long loan deal, prompting the Owls boss to bemoan his luck in the transfer market.
"That's football," he sighed. "He was one of my targets and now he's scoring goals for fun.
"He considered his options and felt Derby would be a better place to play his football. I was disappointed and I wouldn't imagine that he'll become available again."
Wednesday chairman Dave Allen has promised to buy the club a new striker from his own pocket but, until the transfer embargo lifts in January, Sturrock will have to scour the market for loan deals.
"It's soul destroying," he continued. "I want an experienced course and distance centre forward but they're difficult to find and prise out of football clubs.
"I keep going over old ground in assuring people that we're trying - but we are."
