Paul Merson is confident Walsall will be able to loan Southampton teenager Andrew Surman again next season.

Surman spent the closing months of the season on loan at The Bescot Stadium after being allowed to accrue first team experience by Saints boss Harry Redknapp.

The 19-year-old impressed during his stint with the League One outfit and scored twice in 14 appearances for The Saddlers.

Walsall boss Merson wants to bring the midfielder back to the club next term and does not feel the managerial situation at St Mary's should impact on his hopes.

"I hope Andrew will be back with us, if not on a season-long deal, then maybe on loan for six months," said Merson.

"I haven't tried to speak to Harry since the weekend because obviously he has got plenty to think about.

"But as soon as I know who the Southampton manager is going to be I'll be on to them. I think we've got a chance either way.

"Harry likes getting the younger players out for experience, so if he stays I think we'll be okay."
