Stopper talking to Eagles

Fitz Hall is holding transfer talks with newly promoted Crystal Palace.

Fitz Hall is holding transfer talks with Crystal Palace after Southampton granted him permission to speak with Iain Dowie's newly promoted side.

The Eagles were linked with the Saints stopper at the back end of last month and are believed to have tabled a £1.5 million offer for the 23-year-old.

Southampton wanted to retain Hall at St Mary's Stadium this season, but were reluctant to keep a player who harboured hopes of first-team football elsewhere.

The Leytonstone-born defender's attributes are well know to Dowie, having worked with the Palace boss during their days at Oldham Athletic.

Saints chairman Rupert Lowe confirmed the news and revealed the club have a transfer target in mind should the need arise to bring in additional cover.

"At Fitz's request we have given Crystal Palace permission to speak to him but any move will of course be subject to a medical and the two parties agreeing personal terms," explained Lowe to the club's official website.

"Obviously we would like to keep him as part of our squad but as a club we have always subscribed to the view that we only want players who want to be here.

"It may be a blow to lose Fitz but people need not worry about whether he will have a successor.

"We have somebody in mind and if the need arises we would expect to replace him within the next week or so."
