Barnsley have reportedly agreed a free transfer deal with Premiership side Southampton for defender Garry Monk.

The 24-year-old, who has been on loan with The Tykes since November, is expected to be handed a contract until the end of the season with the Second Division promotion-chasers.

His loan move is due to expire following Barnsley's home clash with bottom club Wycombe Wanderers.

However, Oakwell chairman Peter Ridsdale revealed his intention to speak with Saints counterpart Rupert Lowe about making a move for the defender.

"I've been in talks with Southampton and the player's agent and we are in a position where I am hopeful of the player signing before the weekend," Ridsdale told the Sheffield Star.

"I am planning to talk again today (Wednesday) to Southampton chairman Rupert Lowe but as I say I'm very hopeful."
