Walsall manager Colin Lee has admitted defeat in his efforts to keep loan signing Chris Baird at the club for a further month.

Baird has been on loan at The Sadlers for the previous two months but Southampton boss Gordon Strachan has refused to sanction an extended deal because of injuries to his own squad.

Baird enjoyed an impressive start to his Southampton career by making only his second appearance in last season's FA Cup final, but this year the young right back has struggled to establish himself in Strachan's first-team plans.

Despite a red card on his final appearance for Walsall against Crystal Palace at the weekend, the Northern Ireland international has been a consistent performer and manager Lee will be sad to see him go.

He said: "I am really disappointed to be losing him. It is a pity and trying to get a player like him will be difficult."
