SOUTHAMPTON boss Gordon Strachan has reassured Chris Marsden that his place in the side is not under threat by the recent arrival of Neil McCann.

McCann, who joined from Rangers last week, is likely to start the season on the left wing with Marsden injured casting doubts over his first-team place.

But Strachan insists Marsden has a big part to play in his plans at St Mary's after impressing last season.

"I've told him (Marsden) there is always room for bald grumpy old men in the team," joked Strachan.

Meanwhile, Southampton are reported to be still tracking Ipswich defender Matt Richards.

The Saints are thought to have had one offer rejected for the youngster, but Strachan is still keen to sign him as he sees him as a replacement for Wayne Bridge.
