Sky Bet Championship: Kenny Jackett hails Wolves' defence after win

Wolves boss Kenny Jackett praised his defence as they held firm to give the Midlands club a 1-0 victory at Sheffield Wednesday.

Wanderers took the lead with just six minutes to play when the former Wednesday striker Leon Clarke slotted home from close range following Bakary Sako's cross.

The result sees Jackett's men end a miserable run of five losses on the spin, as they secured their first win in seven games.

Jackett said: "My back four did very well today, and so too my goalkeeper although he didn't have much to do.

"In my assessment it was a great game which was end to end. We were able to work their goalkeeper particularly well in the second half, and we came through some tough periods in the game creating some good chances.

Wolves ended their miserable run with a 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday

"We scored a good quality goal from Clarke, so there was some incisiveness there. Sheffield Wednesday going down to their fans in that second half can really pin them in, so that goal was crucial."

Rajiv van La Parra impressed on the afternoon, and Jackett was delighted with his performance.

"It's been an area for us where we haven't had enough experience and we haven't had enough options. Van La Parra today I thought was a threat for us, but he's been playing wide and he's only just played his first two games up front," said Jackett.

Wednesday boss Stuart Gray bemoaned his side's missed chances.

"Nobody means to miss deliberately, but for some reason today just wasn't our day. You couldn't fault our effort or commitment, but we just needed that little bit of composure," said Gray.

"Kenny Jackett gets into half-time thinking 'how are we still in the game?', but a lack of quality in front of goal has let us down today."

Gray felt that the Owls dominated the majority of the proceedings, and was unhappy over the defending for Clarke's winner.

"One thing we do know is that a lapse of concentration might cost you, and it did," Gray explained.

"The second half was far too open, but when you are on top like we were, you cannot believe that we haven't got a goal. One lapse of concentration has cost us either one point or three points.

"Coming off back to back wins you couldn't have wished for a better start. We could have been maybe 3-0 up in the first 20 minutes. We dominated with the ball and we dominated with the chances."
