Wolves defender Matt Doherty has been called up to the Republic of Ireland Under 21 squad for the clash with Italy on Monday.

Highly-rated defender Doherty is one of several players drafted into the squad for the Republic's final UEFA European Championships qualifying game.

Doherty is yet to feature for Wolves this season under Stale Solbakken after impressing during his five appearances for the Molineux outfit last term.

Republic boss Noel King is missing Shane Duffy, Greg Cunningham, Rhys Murphy and Jeff Hendrick through suspension and Doherty and Blackburn midfielder John O'Sullivan have been drafted into the squad.

King is planning to give some of his younger players a chance to impress against Italy with the Republic's hopes of qualification ended by Thursday's defeat to Hungary.
