Karl Henry has admitted his gratitude to former boss Mick McCarthy, but knows Wolves now need to refocus upon the fight to avoid Premier League relegation.
The Molineux club on Monday parted company with their now ex-manager and brought to an end an almost six-year relationship in the process.
At Wolves, McCarthy succeeded where the likes of Dave Jones and Glenn Hoddle failed in getting the club promoted to the Premier League and then keeping their top-flight place.
And although club owner Steve Morgan decided to act amid current fears of relegation, former captain Henry thinks McCarthy can leave with pride.
"It was a difficult day yesterday," Henry told Wolves'
official website on Tuesday. "I was one of the gaffer's first signings and it has been a great five-and-a-half years.
"He did wonders for the club. Before he came, several managers had tried and failed to get Wolves up. Dave Jones did well to get Wolves there, but then they went back down.
Relegation battle
"The gaffer did what no manager in the modern era had done by getting up and then staying up. He can certainly leave with his head held high."
Henry, though, knows there is no time to dwell on the past at a time when Wolves are sat in the Premier League relegation zone after the humiliating 5-1 home defeat to West Brom, which proved to be McCarthy's last game in charge.
Having been knocked out of the FA Cup by Birmingham, Wolves are not in action this weekend and so their next game is the difficult league trip to Newcastle on 25th February.
"Unfortunately these things happen in football and we will all move on," said Henry of McCarthy's sacking. "Now, though, we also have to focus, because we've got another relegation battle on our hands.
"We will look forward to the Newcastle game, which is a tough one, and we need to make sure we are in good shape for whoever is in charge of us.
"We've just got to get on with it and try and kick on for these last 13 games."
