Wolverhampton Wanderers have placed striker Leon Clarke on the transfer list.
The 21-year-old will have his name circulated to other clubs after falling down the pecking order at Molineux.
Despite having 18 months left on his contract with the Black Country club, both McCarthy and Clarke have agreed to alert interested clubs regarding the striker's availability this month.
"I want to freshen things up in the striking department and when I spoke to Leon, we both felt it would perhaps be better for his career if he was to move on," McCarthy told the club's official website.
"He is a player who has the potential to do well and has been given the opportunity to show what he is capable of.
"But, for whatever reason, it's just not clicking for him here at the moment.
"Leon has been at Wolves for a long time - since he was in the schoolboy ranks - and I think a move will give him the chance to make a fresh start."
