Brighton & Hove Albion have failed with a bid for Barnet striker Tresor Kandol.
The 25-year-old has begun the season in impressive fashion, but The Bees have snubbed the £150,000 bid.
"We watched him a few times. He's 6ft 1ins, quick and strong, and we offered what we think is the player's value, but Barnet rejected the bid," said Seagulls chairman Dick Knight.
"We are now pursuing other options ahead of the transfer deadline."
Brighton manager Mark McGhee, who has sent loanee Keith Lowe back to Wolves, could now turn his attention to Hull City's Ben Burgess.
Hull have made a move for Ipswich Town's Nicky Forster, which could mean Burgess is available to leave.
