West Brom have failed with a bid for QPR winger Matt Phillips but negotiations are ongoing, Sky sources understand.
Baggies boss Tony Pulis is keen to sign the 24-year-old after missing out on Demba Ba last month, the former Chelsea striker deciding to reject a return to the Premier League in favour of joining Shanghai Shenhua in China.
An offer believed to be around £5m for Phillips was reportedly rejected by relegated Rangers, but further talks are expected next week.
The Baggies hope to add reinforcements to their squad before they head off to America next weekend on their second pre-season tour.
James McClean joined West Brom last month on a three-year deal from Wigan and is the club's only signing of the summer transfer window so far.
