West Brom boss Roy Hodgson admits he maintains an interest in bringing Craig Gardner back to the midlands following a failed attempt in January.
Former Aston Villa and Birmingham midfielder Gardner moved to Sunderland last summer and initially struggled to settle in the North East.
However, Martin O'Neill's appointment as the club's new manager in December changed the fortunes of the 25-year-old, who has since rediscovered his form.
The Baggies host the Black Cats on Saturday and, although he is unaware of Gardner's current position at Sunderland, Hodgson may make a renewed bid in the summer.
"The idea was mooted originally because he was very unhappy up there apparently and wanted to get back to Birmingham," Hodgson told the Daily Express.
"While talks were taking place at the beginning of the transfer window, Craig got back into the team, started playing well and scoring goals.
"I don't know whether he is still happy there or if he has desires to come back to the midlands.
"If he does want to move back I am sure we will be one of the clubs interested in him."
