West Brom boss Roy Hodgson has played down reports suggesting the club are preparing to send Craig Dawson out on loan.
With the loan window having swung open, clubs are free to conduct transfer business once more.
Skysports.com revealed that a number of Championship clubs known to be keen on striking a deal, but that West Brom were not keen on letting him go.
The second tier interest has been ignited by Dawson's failure to force his way into the first-team picture at The Hawthorns and a spell he spent with former employers Rochdale last term.
West Brom hold him in high regard, though, and Hodgson is expecting the 21-year-old to play a more prominent role this season.
For that reason, he has warned any potential suitors that they would be wasting their time in requesting a loan.
Hodgson said: "Craig had a good season last year with Rochdale so, even before he arrived back here and before I'd seen him play or worked with him, clubs were asking if we would loan him out again.
"The answer then was no. We wanted to see him and work with him and that remains the case, and perhaps even more so the case now I have worked with him and have seen him play."
