Skysports.com understands West Bromwich Albion have agreed terms to sign Craig Dawson and will send the defender back to Rochdale on loan.

Dawson has established himself as one of the most promising centre-halves outside the Premier League and was a key figure in Dale's promotion to League One last season.

He had been a target for Middlesbrough earlier in the summer, but the Championship were unable to agree a fee with Dale.

West Brom have stepped in with a suitable offer for the 20-year-old and skysports.com revealed earlier on deadline day that Dawson was heading for talks with Roberto Di Matteo.

It is understood that Dawson has accepted a move to The Hawthorns, but will immediately be sent back to Rochdale.

Dawson will continue to build up his first-team experience with Keith Hill's side after making over 50 appearances during his career at Spotland to date.
