Baggies stopper signs new one-year deal at the Hawthorns

West Brom goalkeeper Dean Kiely has signed a new one-year contract with the Baggies. The 38-year-old has had to play second fiddle to Scott Carson this season after the England international signed from Liverpool in the summer for £3.25million. The former Charlton stopper has played just once all season, appearing in the Carling Cup second round defeat to League One Hartlepool back in August. The veteran was a virtual ever-present last season as Tony Mowbray's men secured promotion to the top-flight by being crowned Championship winners. Despite his lack of action at the Hawthorns this season the Salford-born keeper represented his country when he came off the bench to replace Shay Given at half-time of the Republic of Ireland's friendly draw with Norway in August. Kiely has amassed 10 caps for his country while featuring 76 times in all competitions for West Brom since his arrival from Portsmouth in January 2007 on a free transfer.

Setback

Meanwhile, defender Jonas Olsson is set to face at least another month on the sidelines. The £800,000 summer capture from NEC Nijmegen in Holland hasn't played since the 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa at the start of January. The news is yet another injury blow for Mowbray as he looks to lift the Baggies off the bottom of the table. "Jonas was told from last week to do nothing for two weeks, and in all it will be possibly six weeks before he can even think about playing," Mowbray said. "It is a rest thing. We are going to give him a few days to go home and then maybe come back and train from next Wednesday and get ready to start rehabilitation."
