Midfielder shines in victory

West Brom manager Tony Mowbray has hailed summer recruit Filipe Teixeira following the 2-0 win over Barnsley. The Portuguese midfielder scored on 30 minutes after an excellent run, and he then turned provider when he laid the ball off for fellow new signing Craig Beattie. Mowbray is now confident he has the right blend of players and is pleased with the depth of his squad.

Jigsaw piece

"Filipe stepped up and produced the same kind of quality that we had last season from the likes of Diomansy Kamara and Jason Koumas," Mowbray said. "He has added to the quality of the team in the final third. He is a talented individual who is a piece of the jigsaw that we are trying to put together. "The balance of our team is better this season. We can bring Richard Chaplow on to close things down and Pele couldn't even get on the bench against Barnsley and he can do a similar job. "We have options now and hopefully we can get the benefit of those options." Barnsley manager Simon Davey was unhappy with his side's first-half display and rued two careless errors.
Drawing board
"I am disappointed and so is the dressing room after our three-game unbeaten run came to an end and we need to get back to the drawing board," Davey said. "In the first half we didn't get to grips with Albion and I told the players how unhappy I was at half-time. "We had a game plan but we made two mistakes and you cannot afford to do that at this level as you will be punished. "In the second half the players stepped up. We restricted Albion's chances and had chances of our own but we still lost the game. "On another day Anderson De Silva's second-half shot might have gone in rather than being saved by Dean Kiely and if we had scored then we would really have got our tails up. "We passed the ball better in the second half but we need to get back to winning ways as soon as we can."
