James Morrison has revealed he lied about his fitness because he was so desperate to make his Scotland debut.
The West Brom midfielder linked up with Scotland for Wednesday's friendly with South Africa despite picking up a hamstring injury last weekend.
Morrison had been cleared by Fifa to switch countries after representing England at youth-team level.
However, he has been forced to withdraw from the squad after failing to recover from the hamstring problem and the former Middlesbrough youngster admitted he was heartbroken to miss out on his Scotland bow.
Despair"It is a nightmare. I felt it in Saturday's game and it didn't get any better," Morrison told the Daily Record.
"I was hurting but I just ignored it. I didn't want to tell anyone because I was so desperate to play but I couldn't ignore it any longer.
"I had to confess in the end because it wouldn't have been right for my team-mates and the fans.
Gutted"I am gutted - I really wanted to play but I am confident I will be back.
"Alex told me to keep my chin up and said he would keep monitoring me.
"I feared the worst but that picked me up. I hope to be fit for the weekend game at Sheffield United."
