Promotion-chasing West Brom and Southampton both won on Wednesday.
The Baggies have moved to within a point of Preston after securing a 2-1 win over Plymouth at The Hawthorns.
The deadlock was broken just before the break when Diomansy Kamara slotted home from the penalty spot after Akos Buzsaky handled in the box.
Kamara doubled West Brom's lead when he netted from a tight angle after 50 minutes.
However, The Pilgrims failed to read the script and deservedly pulled one back when Rory Fallon smashed the ball home past debutant keeper Dean Kiely.
Despite a frantic finish, in-form West Brom held on for the points, their 15th league win of the season.
Southampton remain level with The Baggies on points securing a 2-1 success over Sheffield Wednesday.
Kenwyne Jones' seventh-minute finish put Saints ahead, but Steven MacLean levelled matters shortly after the interval.
However, Jones' second just before the hour mark from Chris Baird's cross ensured George Burley's side secure the three-point haul.
