The 36-year-old was released by The Baggies at the end of last season, following the club's relegation into Division One.
He was linked with a possible switch to Conference side Telford but Cheltenham boss Bobby Gould has managed to persuade the veteran to train with his squad prior to the new season.
Gould first signed Taylor when he was in charge of West Brom back in 1992 and the striker went on to score 96 League goals in 238 appearances for the West Midlands club.
The former Wales boss knows all about the hit-man and is keen to work with him at Whaddon Road.
He told the club's official website: "Bob has been passed fit by the physio at West Brom following his knee operation and will train with us next week.
"He is coming down to have a look at us and for us to have a look at him.
"The nicest thing is that he phoned me to say that he was available to come and train if we wanted him."
The biggest stumbling block to any move could be the player's wages but Gould is confident that a deal could be worked out.
"We have not started talking along those lines yet and we are only taking things one step at a time," he added.
"But the board are aware of how we view the make up of the squad and hopefully I will be in a position to put a proposal to them."
