Preston striker Joe Garner believes past meetings will have no bearing on this weekend's League One play-off final against Swindon.

Garner, whose 27-goal haul this season earned him the League One Player of the Year award, fired his third hat-trick of the campaign against Swindon at the end of April.

But the 27-year-old former Carlisle, Nottingham Forest and Watford forward places no significance on that success, nor Preston's 1-0 defeat at the County Ground in November, heading into Sunday's Wembley showdown.

"I don't think so no," he said. "They made a lot of changes here at Deepdale and when we played them away is quite a long while ago now.

"It's come down to one big game and we're obviously looking forward to it.

"It would be nice to repeat that (home win). I scored a hat-trick against them here at Deepdale and we won 3-0, so it was a nice day and hopefully we can do something similar at the weekend."

Swindon leaked plenty of goals in their 7-6 semi-final aggregate win against Sheffield United and Garner hopes he and strike partner Jermaine Beckford can exploit their defensive frailty.

"Everybody knows how Swindon play," he added. "But they've got some very good players there.

Preston 3-0 Chesterfield: Highlights

"They're quite an open side. They make the pitch very big and there's obviously going to be spaces around.

"But we'll respect them. We know they're a good side. They beat us at their place and we respect them, but we'll go into the game confident.

"They play some good football. Obviously they've had a good year. The manager's got them playing in his own style and they're a good side."
