Grayson praise for Davies

Simon Grayson has hailed Kevin Davies' importance to Preston after the veteran striker hinted he wants to carry on playing next season.

The England cap celebrates his 38th birthday this week and, having made his debut for Chesterfield in 1993, he is currently in the 23rd season of his career with Sky Bet League One side North End. Davies has played 37 times for the Lilywhites this term and admitted in an interview last week that he aims to be back for a 24th campaign in August. The striker's two-year deal runs out this summer, though, and as Preston may be back in the Championship by then, boss Grayson likely has a decision to make soon over whether he wants to keep Davies on board. Contract negotiations are not occupying the forefront of Grayson's mind in the middle of an automatic promotion tilt but he was quick to hail Davies' value to his squad at Deepdale. "Kev's contributed massively to this club since he's been here and that's the reason why he brought him," said the ex-Leeds boss. "With his off-the-field stuff, he does a lot of work with the younger players. But also, when he's played, he's never let us down, coming on in games, starting games, he's contributed and he's still as hungry and as fit as ever. "He's got a fantastic attitude and we've been delighted with what Kev's done for this football club since he's been here. "We'll talk about the (contract) situation when everyone feels fit and proper to do it."
