Preston boss Graham Westley praised his penalty takers for holding their nerve to beat Carlisle 3-1 on penalties in the JPT.
David Buchanan fired home the decisive spot-kick after the home side had missed three times in succession.
Westley, who made nine changes from the side which beat Swindon 4-1 just 48 hours earlier, said: "It was a scruffy performance but credit to the boys, they found a way to win.
"Carlisle treat this competition very seriously and with a game 48 hours earlier, it was even tougher for us.
"We were forced into a number of changes because of the recovery factor. It was disjointed but we found a way to win."
