Westley: Hunts for fresh talent

Sky Bet

Preston manager Graham Westley will continue to scour football's less glamourous locations for rough diamonds.

Westley served much of his managerial apprenticeship at non-league level, and the former Stevenage boss saw striker Graham Cummins mark his second appearance since joining North End from Irish outfit Cork City with a goal against Sheffield United on Saturday.

"I've never lost my roots in non-league football," he said. "I grew up as a manager in non-league football and I think there's a massive market of untapped talent, both at a playing level and a coaching level.

"There are some wonderful people who work in the non-league game. Ireland is a similar sort of place.

"If you get out there and you go and look at non-league football or Irish football there's a wealth of talent and you don't have to go and spend hundreds of thousands or millions of pounds to bring that talent in.

"You can get together a lot of hunger and a lot of appetite. Sure, you've got to develop the qualities of the people you get, but if the raw ingredients, the willingness to learn, the desire, the hunger and the ambition are there then you have a lot to work with."
