Magpies boss rewarded along with in-form Lilywhites striker

Notts County manager Martin Allen has been named Manager of the Month for September following a run of four wins and a draw. The Magpies got the better of Bournemouth, Walsall, Stevenage and Rochdale during the month, while they were held by Exeter. County found themselves at the wrong end of the League One table last season but have been turned into contenders this time around. Allen has been delighted with the team's start to the campaign and remains quietly optimistic they can secure a play-off place.

Fantastic

"The players have been absolutely fantastic," he told Sky Sports News. "We recruited a lot of new players in the summer. Everybody's blended together and done superbly well. "The one game you forgot to mention was our Champions League game away to Juventus which we drew 1-1. "We set out at the start of the season to stay up, to get that 50 point mark. It wasn't very nice for our supporters at the end of last season going into that Brighton game needing one point to stay up. "If we can get to the 49, 50 mark as soon as possible, we'll see where we can go and maybe the play-offs, that would be something else."
Player award
Preston striker Neil Mellor has landed the Player of the Month award for September thanks to an impressive haul of six goals in just four games. "It is a fantastic achievement for Neil. In the first month of the season, Neil was getting used to new coaching methods and a different management style from myself and Brian," commented manager Phil Brown. "He took that on board fairly positively and now all of a sudden he has responded even better in September by scoring six goals in a very strong winning team. "The fact that Iain Hume and Jamie Proctor have been playing alongside him have helped Neil get his chances. In terms of finishing, he is one of the best I have ever worked with."
