Rangers manager Walter Smith has played down talk the club are preparing a bid for David Nugent.

The Preston ace is one of the most sought-after talents outside the Premiership due to his impressive 15-goal haul this term.

Nugent's form prompted a club record bid from Sheffield United for the ex-Bury man in January, but Preston were unwilling to do business.

Gers boss Smith was spotted at Deepdale on Monday for Preston's clash with Southampton, which fuelled speculation he was readying a bid for Nugent.

However, he has no plans to raid The Lilywhites for the free-scoring striker.

"There's nothing in it," explained Smith. "People saw me at the game and put two and two together."
