Preston's 3-0 win at Norwich on Bank Holiday Monday was marred by Adam Nowland suffering a double fracture to his right leg.

Earlier in the game Nowland had scored but what looked to be an enjoyable afternoon was soon ruined by a robust challenge from Norwich midfielder Dickson Etuhu.

Preston assistant manager David Kelly was furious with Etuhu's challenge and had to be restrained from taking his protests too far by the fourth official and a police officer.

''We were brilliant but Adam's injury is a blow to him and us,'' said Kelly.

''We are disappointed for him first and foremost. He's been playing very well.''

Whilst Nowland is now facing a lengthy lay-off, Canaries boss Nigel Worthington has leapt to the defence of his player Etuhu.

''From where I was - and I was very close - it was a very hard and very fair tackle, which is part of the game,'' claimed Worthington.

''There was no malice and the referee has seen it that way as well.''
