Smith heads for The Well

Northern Ireland international Andy Smith has joined Motherwell on loan.

Northern Ireland international Andy Smith has joined Motherwell on loan until January.

The 24-year-old striker has followed the same path as fellow Preston player Alan McCormack, who has also joined the Scottish Premier League side.

The Lilywhites have bolstered their forward options with the signings of Danny Dichio and David Hibbert and Smith has been loaned out in order to give him more first-team opportunties.

Preston manager Billy Davies confirmed to the club's official website: "It gives Andy the opportunity to play first-team football week in, week out.

"It's a chance to play regularly, hopefully get some confidence and goals and we will watch him and see what happens between now and January."

Smith, who was named on standby for Northern Ireland's forthcoming friendly with Malta, is now in line for a debut against Dunfermline Athletic on Saturday.
