Davies moves in on Hume

Preston boss Billy Davies has had talks with a number of clubs about new signings.

Preston North End manager Billy Davies has had discussions with Tranmere Rovers to sign Iain Hume.

Tranmere are just one of many clubs that Davies has been in talks with to strengthen his squad.

"Talks are still going on," Davies told the club's official website.

"We are still very hopeful we can add him to our squad and he will be an excellent addition, but he is just one of a number of players that we need to compete in this league.

"Talks are going on with clubs and we want to get something sorted as quickly as we can.

"But we need to work within our means, we cannot go out and spend £1 million on a new striker or two, we have to be realistic."

There are still options for Davies up front, but David Healy's move to Leeds United has left the strikeforce weakened.

"It will give people like Simon Lynch, Andy Smith, Sungu and young Mark Jackson a chance to prove themselves," Davies added.

"But of course we are looking, we have just lost two players who scored 34 goals last season and we have to replace them."

Healy will be returning to Deepdale next Saturday just days after his transfer.
