The writing was on the wall for Preston - who ended the game with ten men after Richard Cresswell was sent off for violent conduct - when Bjarni Gudjonsson curled brilliantly home from 25 yards out just two minutes in.
Preston then hit the post through Ricardo Fuller but six minutes later it was two - Michael Doyle slotting home after a scintillating pass from Gary McSheffrey.
Provider then turned scorer - McSheffrey adding a third on 12 minutes with a well taken finish from inside the box.
Preston could scarcely believe what had happened - but their night was to get worse, when Iceland international Gudjonsson made it four just before the half hour mark with a neat header.
Preston did grab one back through Fuller, but any hopes of a comeback were ended when the assistant referee spotted an incident in the box, as Preston prepared to take a free kick.
After consulting with his linesman, the referee produced the red card to a flabbergasted Cresswell, and to add insult to injury, he then banished Craig Brown to the stands for his angry reaction to the decision.
