Lucas spent October with The Owls and made seven appearances for the Second Division outfit.
Owls boss Chris Turner has been striving to bring Lucas back to South Yorkshire for the past fortnight due to injuries to Kevin Pressman and Ola Tidman.
Pressman has been playing on through a groin problem and Turner desperately wanted Lucas to come in as cover.
But Preston boss Craig Brown was unwilling to release the 26-year-old until rookie keeper Andrew Lonergan returned from England Under-20 duty.
Brown has decided he can now afford to let Lucas go back to Hillsborough and the North End chief hopes the shot-stopper will force his way into the Owls side.
"There had been a lot of interest in David but with Andrew on international duty we couldn't afford to let him go," Brown told the club's website.
"But now this will give him a chance to get some first-team football."
Meanwhile, The Owls have released French striker Mickael Antoine-Curier after spending a month at the club.
The former Nottingham Forest hit-man, who has had spells at Brentford, Oldham Athletic, Kidderminster Harriers and Rochdale over the past few months, made just one substitute appearance for Chris Turner's side and will again need to look for pastures new.
