Silkmen add to Tykes' woes

MACCLESFIELD TOWN provided the result of the night in the Worthington Cup as they dumped Barnsley out with an amazing 4-1 win after extra time, while Brighton and Preston needed extra time to see off Exeter and Scunthorpe respectively.

Kyle Lightbourne (pictured) gave The Silkmen the lead at Moss Rose on the half hour but Isaiah Rankin sent the game into extra time when he levelled four minutes from time.

Danny Whitaker then became the hero when he fired in a hat-trick in extra time to give the hosts a thrilling 4-1 win and pile more pressure on under fire Tykes boss Steve Parkin.

Third Division Exeter City took the lead at Brighton through Barry McConnell's sixth minute penalty before Shaun Wilkinson's screamer equalised in the 35th minute.

The game went into extra time with no further scoring but The Seagulls secured their passage into the next round when Danny Cullip struck in the 103rd minute.

Preston North End also needed extra time to see-off Third Division opposition as they eventually overcame Scunthorpe 2-1 at Deepdale.

Steve Torpey gave Iron an early lead only for Graham Alexander to level with his penalty on 23 minutes and Ricardo Fuller was the hero for The Lilywhites with his two minutes before the end of extra time.

Swansea gave Wolves a scare at Vetch Field as Dave Jones's men had to come from behind twice to earn a 3-2 win against the Welsh outfit.

Nathan Blake equalised James Thomas's early goal only for Jamie Wood to put the hosts back in front. Ludovic Pollet put Wolves level before Alex Rae grabbed the winner 12 minutes from time.

Swindon and Wycombe also needed extra time to settle the argument at The County Ground after a dull encounter ended 0-0 after 90 minutes.

The game exploded into life in the extra period as Richard Harris gave the visitors the lead a minute into extra time only for Adam Willis to level things up on the 100 minute mark before Paul McCarthy's winner nine minutes later.

League newcomers Boston United did not enjoy their first Worthington Cup tie at York Street as they were hammered 4-1 by Cardiff City.

Robert Earnshaw did most of the damage with a first half hat-trick to add to a Tom Bennet own goal and Peter Thorne strike with just Paul Ellender's solitary strike for Boston.

Coventry City cruised into the next round with a 3-0 demolition of Colchester United at Highfield Road thanks to goals from Gary McSheffrey, Gary McAllister and Lee Mills.

Nottingham Forest handed out a 4-0 thumping to Kidderminster at The City Ground with a Jack Lester brace along with goals from Riccardo Scimeca and David Johnson.

Sheffield Wednesday were the other team to get through to the second round of the competition with Gerald Sibon's 2nd minute strike enough to see-off Rochdale at Hillsborough.
