Adam Smith thinks that England Under-21s' victory in Serbia could be what the side needed to fire them to European U21 Championship glory.
The Tottenham full-back is in Stuart Pearce's squad for the tournament which kicks off in Israel on Wednesday and was part of the team which overcame the Serbians in the qualifying play-off. The second leg in Krusevac was marred by deplorable scenes of racism and violence.
But Smith says the tough encounter could be just what the side required in order to be a success, saying: "It was probably my worst experience at a football match.
"But for all of us to be in it together, it strangely felt good afterwards. People had each others' backs. We've taken the confidence and togetherness from that horrible night to move forward.
"Now we all want to go forward together and finish the job off."
