Baggies midfielder believes England are getting a top coach

George Thorne claims the Football Association's approach for Roy Hodgson has come as no surprise to those who work under him at West Brom. The Baggies boss has emerged as the leading candidate to inherit the England national team reins, with the FA having made him its top, and only, target. The decision has surprised many, with Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp considered to be the leading candidate for the role. Hodgson is, however, expected to be confirmed as the new England manager on Tuesday, having held discussions with FA bosses. Those who have played under him during his time at The Hawthorns will be sad to see him go, with his vast experience having helped to consolidate the Baggies as a Premier League outfit.

Great loss

They are, however, not surprised to find that his services are in demand, with teenage midfielder Thorne of the opinion that Hodgson thoroughly deserves his England opportunity. "When the news broke it didn't come as a surprise to us," he said. "He can definitely do a good job for England. "Anyone who says he can't after what happened at Liverpool is talking nonsense. "He'll be a great loss to us."
